Please don't take my blog away from me!
I never thought I'd admit this, but I now have an addiction problem.
I'm addicted to my blog.
Why do I cling to my classroom blog so tenaciously? Here's a short list of reasons:
- Students love computers and are highly motivated to use them. The most frequent comment from students upon entering my room is "Are we going to the computer lab today?"
- The fact that student work is published on the blog motivates higher quality work as students don't want to look bad in front of their peers--a much more effective motivator at this age than just the encouragement of a teacher or parent
- I can differentiate for and scaffold a variety of students without it being obvious to anyone else. Those students are then much more willing to accept help.
- Because my students have their work on a password protected 8th grade site, I can check their work without taking 100 or so papers home every day. I can also leave them comments on their work, which they love.
- Because my lessons stay on the site indefinitely, students who were absent or got behind can go back and read and follow the directions from home or in class while we work on something else in class.
- I can work on lessons and stories at home, at school, or anywhere there's an internet connection.
- I can add links to important sites (such as SFPL) on my nav bar for easy access by me and my students.
- I can use the blog for my own writing--plans, lessons, essays, stories, etc.
- I can print my own work and student work from my site.
