Create Your Own Reading List: Introduction
Greetings and salutations! Today you're going to see some examples of reading lists created by teachers and kids like you so that you can eventually create one of your own and publish it. That way, other kids can read it and get your expert advice on what's worth reading.
Here are the steps for the assignment:
- Create your personal top ten list of books and other reading materials.
- Look at the amazon.com site to see some lists created by kids and other people about what they recommend.
- Write a story on the 8th grade site that includes the titles and authors of the books (or other reading materials) on your list, as well as a very brief review.
- Write a lead for your list, including a pseudonym for yourself .
Eventually, Ms. Turnbull will figure out how we can create a centrally located story including the leads to all your stories and links to your story for anyone who is enticed into reading your lists. All you brilliant computer wizards will probably help me do this, including Mr. Delaney.
Before we begin, let's create the magic of two screens by opening a new window. Then let's visit my favorite book source, Amazon.com. When you click on the blue text below, you will reach the search results I got when I typed in "Young Adult" in Amazon's search engine. I'm going to give you about 10 minutes to browse around in the lists on the far right side of the page. Each list will take you to books and more lists. Look around and see what people call themselves (their pseudonyms) and how they review their books. If you don't see anything that looks like something you'd read, type your favorite book in the search box. Your book will come up, as well as lists that included your favorite book. Please do not go to any other categories other than books while you are on this site.

It was kind of nice to look at books that i like and I also got to see some previews of books i havn't read. Since i saw some interesting books, I'd like to read some of them. I've done this kind of search at home before but it was mostly on games. Now, I have tried out looking for books on Amazon. I can also type in an author's name and Amazon can help me find the books that are written by that author. I think it's simple, easy, and fast. Next time, I'm just going to go here if I'm bored.
--Kenny Liao ( xaznxxboix@yahoo.com ) from 204 on 1/13/2003; 1:02:57 PM
Amazon was Alittle helpful to me but, not really. Most of the books I search for did not having and list about it. I like it because some of the book had good reviews that other kids wrote. I Could find out what the book was about from other people and people who review the book. It also add a side list of other books that is like the book I read and books that would be good.
--Brian Hidalgo ( xxghettopinoyxx@aol.com ) from 204 on 1/13/2003; 1:02:04 PM

I did do something like this before at home but I did add any comments to it before, so that part was new to me. I think that doing the kind of search is pretty cool in all. I hope that we can do this next time soon. Using the web is a very easy way to find new and exciting books to read when you don't have anything to read or when your bored. So that's what I think about today's lesson in the lab
--Janice H. ( student@gaggle.net ) from 204 on 1/13/2003; 10:29:07 AM

Like the Good Morning Gorillas and the Thanksgiving on Thursday. I've also see a section of You Be the Jury books by Marvin Miller that i wanted to read.

This site was really interesting. I never used Amazon before, so this is a first time experience. In this site people add comments on their favorite books. If you have nothing to read i would recommend you going to amazon and check out people's list. I'v seen an interesting book that i would like to read and it's called "Marian Keys." I think it is a series book.Another book was called "The Princess Diaries." The person said it was a good teen book so maybe one day i will try and read it. So remember to check out this cool site ok?

I noticed at Amazon.com you can find any kind of book you want or fit your favorites. You can see other peoples' review of all the books and what they recommend to read. I like how you can have a sneak peek and look inside a few pages of the book you want. There are offers on books old and new and it's very easy to use.
