Introduction

I was running and running until I reached a cliff. A person suddenly appear and pushed me down. Ahhhhh!!! My mother came up to me and asked me what's wrong. I was on the floor next to my bed. I guess I was just having a nightmare. Sleeping and dreams have always had me curious, that's why I'm doing a report on sleeping.(I also love to sleep too.) Have you ever wonder why we have nightmares? Or why do we yawn or snore? This report will tell you all you want to know about sleep. I was quite surprised of what I have learned, so I guess you will too.

Why do we need to sleep?

Sleep is like giving our body a mini-vacation and gets us prepared for the next day. Scientists thinks that sleeping is the time when our brain organizes or stores things up, replaces chemicals and solves problem. We also need sleep to stay healthy.

Why do some people snore?

Snoring happens whenever a person can't move air freely through the nose or mouth. Out of 100%, men snore 25% and women only snore 15%. For example, allergies and blocked nasal passages or airways can make a person have a stuffy nose and that cause the person to snore. A deviated septum is the tissue that seperates our two nostrils. If it is crooked, it'll cause us to snore and breathing will be harder; having a surgery can cure both the problems.  This is a run-on sentence.  Chop it into shorter sentences or use a semicolon.  Ask me if you need help! When we drink alcohol, it will relax the throat and tongue muscle too much. That will block the air when we inhale and exhale, that makes us snore too. This is a run-on sentence.   Being overweight can also be the reason why, many people that are overweight snore.

Why do we yawn?

The reason why we yawn is still a mystery. But many people have ideas about why. Some scientists thinks that we yawn to send more oxygen to our brain. Some people think that when we are tired and bored, we don't breathe deeply as we usually do. When we yawn, we bring more oxygen to our blood and we take more carbon dioxide out of our blood. Yawning helps us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Another idea is that yawning stretches the lung and lung tissue. Also, yawning is like a signal to us that it is time to rest.

Why do we have nightmares?

Stressful things that have happened may cause nightmares. Nightmares may be a way to release these stress. For example, (in minor cases) problems at school, like homework may cause nightmares. In major cases, like moving to a new place to live or the illness and death of a loved one may be the reason too. Also, reading or watching scary books or movies before bedtime may also cause nightmares. Or maybe once in a while, having a high fever or taking some medical things can also cause nightmares.

How much sleep do we need?

The amount of sleep for us depends on our age. Babies sleep very much, like 16-17 hours per day. Kids between the ages of 5-12 needs like 8-10 hours a night. Some kids are different, they may need less amount of sleep or more. Adults, on the other hand only needs 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night.

Closing

Before doing this project I didn't know anything about sleep. At first I thought it might be boring too. Well, as I start doing this project, it became interesting to me. Here are some main points. We need to sleep in order to stay healthy. We snore because we may have allergies or blocked airways. Scientists believe that we yawn to send oxygen to our brain. We may have nightmares whenever we are tired, sick or stressed out. The amount of sleep we need depends on our age. Did you learn anything while reading this? I sure have, so I guess you must have too. This is too  much like your introduction's last sentence.

Bibliography  I'm impressed with how many sources you have, but these are not in the correct bibliography format.  In the I-Search: Students link on my left nav bar there's a link to a great bibliography style sheet to use as a guide.  Or you can ask me.

I-Search Journal

Posted by BIYIN_Y, 2/25/03 at 10:12:41 AM.

2/25/03

On Friday, 2/21/03, I was continuing on my 5 IQs for my topic "Shooting Stars".  But I found out that I can't come up with 5 IQs and that the SFPL's databases and InfoTrac Kids Edition doesn't have much information about it.  So I changed my topic into "Sleeping".  I have made 5 IQs yesterday and found many articles about it.  But I didn't have time to copy the sources of the articles, so my I-Search Notes doesn't have anything in it.

2/27/03

Today I was listening to Ms.Turnbull's instructions on what to do today.  Then I went back to my I-Search Notes intructions to find an article for my topic.  I have found one, but I don't have time to put it in my I-Search Notes.

3/6/03

Today I was listening to Ms.Turnbull's instructions on what to do today as usual.  Then I went to the article that i found the other day and I copied it down to my I-Search Notes.  Then I spend the rest of my day in class skimming through it.  After a period of time, Ms.Turnbull have told the class to write in the Journal.

3/7/03

Today I was doing the same thing as yesterday.  Today I was doing Read-Pause-Retell on the article of my topic that I found.  I only went up to 3 paragraphs, and my article are very long.  I think I will finish retelling it in a long, long time unless I'm doing it at home.

3/10/03

Today I was doing the same thing as last time.  Today I was doing Read-Pause-Retell on the same article that I started on.  Today I did 3 more paragraphs, so now I have 6 total.  Then Ms.Turnbull came and told Jana and I that we can't work alone.  Then it is time to do the I-Search Journal.

3/11/03

Today I heard Ms.Turnbull said that we have to have at least 2 articles on our topic.  So I didn't do much on my Read-Pause-Retell.  I went searching for another article because I only have one.  But I can't find any that I like.  So I just went and read about Jana's article.  Then it's time for the I-Search Journal.

3/13/03

Today I was creating a new story called I-Search Checklist.  This checklist helps me organize my work.  Then after I copied and paste the example of Ms.Turnbull's checklist, I began to change something from the example.  Then it was time for I-Search Journal.

3/25/03

Today Ms.Turnbull is showing us how to get to the SFPL databases without having the shortcut of not typing in the library number.  Then after that, everybody continued to work on their own stuff.  But most of the computer didn't work because they kept on saying 'page cannot be displayed', many people have the patience to keep on trying and refreshing, but I'm not sure if it will run out or not.

4/4/03

Today I was just trying to finish my I-Search Notes article, but it was too long. I don't want to be held back, so I guess I must do it over the weekend.

4/7/03

Today I was again finishing up I-Search Notes article. Nothing special happened.

4/8/03

Today I was again and again finishing up my I-Search Notes article. I have spend a lot of days trying to finish it up. It was just tooooooo long.

4/9/03

Today I were listening to Ms.Turnbull's lesson steps. After that, I created a story called the I-Search: Interview and linked it to my name page. I also copied some questions to the I-Search Interview. Then I was trying to answer the questions, but I don't know how to answer them. Now I am typing in my I-Search Journal.

4/24/03

Today Ms.Turnbull showed the class a site teaching us how to build a better Bibliography.  After that I continued to finish up my notes. Then Ms.Turnbull came to me asked me about whom that I'm gonna interview. I have NO idea!!! Sleeping is too hard, nobody I know knows about sleeping. My brother and sister's major is not psycology.

5/6/03

Today Ms.Turnbull showed the class the lesson steps. We were writing the rough draft of the introduction today. After I'm done with my introduction, I checked on my notes and corrected them.

5/16/03

Today I was finding sources that answers my questions. I found a site that is interesting, but it don't answers my questions, so I changed my questions. Then it is time for I-Search Journal.

5/19/03

Today I was finishing up my I-Search Report. I have to change some questions in order to answer them. I just finished answering the five IQ. But I still have the closing paragraph to do, then after that I would do revision with a partner. Well, I'll try and finish it tonight.

5/20/03

Today I was finishing up my closing paragraph. After that, I was searching for images of people sleeping. I have found 2 cute babies sleeping, so I copied and pasted the pictures to my I-Search Report. Then it is time for I-Search Journal.

5/21/03

Today I was finishing up some parts of my I-Search Report. After that, I did revision conference with Janice. Then it is time for I-Search Journal entries.
