Language Arts - 3 Period

Did you ever want to know how Walt Disney came up with Mickey Mouse, or came up with the idea of a theme park, way before theme parks ever were popular? I did, so I decided to look on the internet to answer these questions. I came up with a lot of answers, some to questions I asked, and others to questions I didn't ask. My I-Search is about Walt Disney and Walt Disney Prodcutions. Continue reading, and enjoy my I-Search Report!

When was he born/when did he die? What was his childhood like? What was his life like? Walt Disney was born in Chicago in1901 and died in 1966. He was an American movie producer, a pioneer in animated cartoons. He went to high school for one year, then he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago and began his career as a cartoonist in 1920. He started off with short films in 1928, then moved on to bigger things, like full feature length cartons, during World War II. At the end of his life, he had his own studio, got into doing televisoin things (he had his own network, called the "Disney Channel"), and has recieved 31 Academy Awards, and 32 Oscar Awards. He has his own stamp, as well. The Walt Disney Studios are owned by his brother Roy, who forced Disney into expanding his career into televison.

When did the Mickey Mouse and friends come about?
He created the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, and he had his first appearance in the silent movie Plane Crazy. Mickey Mouse then later appeared in Steamboat Willy. Mickey Mouse was instantly famous, and Walt tried to add color and sound into movies.

Are Disney things only for children?
Soon after the Walt Disney company began making cartoons, they started to make shows for adults. I guess children can't be the only one to enjoy the fabulous works of Walt Disney.

How did he come up with the idea of the theme parks? What are the theme parks called? When did they open? Are there only Disney theme parks in the United States?
Well, I don't know how he came up with the ideas of theme parks. People said things like he was bored with just playing with toys when he was small, and he wanted to go outside and create something new. Disneyland opened in Anaheim California, in 1955. California Adventure opened in Feb, 8, with three different areas, each focusing on a different part of California. There are also other theme parks in France, and in Tokoyo, Japan.

When was his first feature film made?
Disney produced the first feature length cartoon, which is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1938. In 1946 he created live and animated cartoons. Disney added live-action movies to their genre, and long after that, they started to produce televison shows. After his death, the Disney Studios remained strong.

What does the Walt Disney Company own?
Walt Disney Pictures creates family entertainment films. Touchtone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures produce films that are for general audiences. Miramax Films produces movies by independent film makers.   There is also Walt Disney Records, which is music for children.

FUNNY FACTS ABOUT WALT DISNEY AND WALT DISNEY COMPANY:

Who knew that Walter Elias Disney did more than create a couple of cartoons. He wanted the world to be fun for children, letting them experience things we kids only wish he could've. He created Mickey Mouse in 1928, and his first feature length film in 1938, just ten years apart. He was an eutrapneur, which is what I want to be. I know most people hink that doing this I-Search report was painstaking, like myself, but it wan't really all that bad. I left this knowing a lot more about one of my many role models.

Day 1

2-21-2003:

Today was a rough day. I did a lot of things ar one time. I finally choose a topic, which is Walt Disney/Walt Disney Productions. I started to find pieces for my I-Search as well.

Day 2

2-25-03:

Today I looked up more sources for my I-Search, and copied the names of the websites that I went to. (For my Bibliography).

Day 3

2-27-03:

Today I looked up articles on the internet, and used the encylopedias in the school library. They were more helpful than the internet sites, just took to long to read everything, then copy down the important things on-line.

Day 4

2-28-03:

Today I found more things on Walt Disney/Walt Dissney Productions. I browsed around on websies, and got the list of names of a few encylopedias, and classic disney movies at the library. I also found out that the library isn't a good place for print sources. They don't have anything good  on Walt Diseny, but they have things good for like movies and things. I really find most of my good sources at the "InfoTrack" website.

Day 5

3-4-03:

Today I actually went aroudn on that virtual tour. The tour is really fun! You just click on the way that you want to go, and you keep on doing that until there is a dead end. At the dead ends, you just turn around adn choose a different way to go. But, be aware that there are hidden sites within the site! I'm going to include the website in my final I-Search.

Day 6

3-6-03:

Today, it was a really hard assignment. I didn't get it at first, so I was saying "What articles?" I mean, and I'm not trying to say this rudely, but you could've said notes instead of articles, so it would've been a tad bit easier on me. Ms. T. had us work with a partner, and mine was Amy, only because she sat the closest to me. The main idea of the assignment, was for us to parapharse our notes, so that we don't have to do that at the exact end of the time. At first I went then Amy. We did that a few times.

Day 7

3-7-03:

Today I summarized all of my notes, and cried. Nothing more, nothing less. I couldn't really do anything, because I was concentrating more on how I should start to find a format for my I-Search, since I'm at that step now.

Day 8

3-10-03:

Today I realized that I through with summarizg all of the notes that I had, so I started to look for more notes. I wanted some on the birth of his characters, like Mickey and Minnie, Donald and Daisy, and Goofy, but I couldn't find any on the Info-Trac For Kids site. I was planning on looking for an encylopedia in the libabry tomorrow for more information. I hope that I will be more succesful with encylopedias than on the internet.

Day 9

3-11-03:

It will be Thursday, when I next write, so let me tell you everything. Today I didn't really have much to do, since I had three articles, all done. I was going to find more on info-trac, but everything they had, I had, or it was useless.

Day 10

3-13-03:

Today we worked on a new thing called I-Search Checklist. We created a story, linked it, the same old same. I did it all on my own, I was so surprised. Tommorrow I will look for internet sources. I have some in mind, but I don't have any particular good ones.

Day 11

3-14-03:

Today I tried to find more print sorces, but Info-Trac din't have any good ones. I tried looking up the name s of the Disney characters, but they all wond up being the name of people, which I found very un-amusing. That was just un-fair.

Day 12

3-16-03:

Today I found a print source on one of the other Disney theme parks, California Adventure. I did the read-pause-retell, without any help from anybody, and think I did pretty well.

Day 13

3-18-03:

Today I looked up more print sources for my I-Search. I did the read-pause-retell. I also foudn a good internet source! Hooray! I was so excited. It gave me a lot of information, like there wa this group of people who spoke about Disney, which I thought was cool.

Day 14

3-25-03:

Today the computers were messed up! You could do something one time, but then you couldn't. I tried to do the advanced thing with the databases, but it took way to long, so then I just went to find some pictures.

Day 15

3-26-03:

Today I double checked and made sure that all of my resources were correct for my print souces and internet sources.

4-04-03:

Today, I din't really do much, except contemplate on who to interview. I was thinking of calling Walt Disney Studios, but that is a really long disntance phone call.

Day 16

4-07-03:

Today I started my bibliography. I din't copy down the informatiojn, but I thought I did, so I had to go and get it. I was trying to find the rest of the information for my bibliography, but the site would freeze every 2 seconds.

Day 17

4-23-03:

Today I had to do my interview brainstorm and questons since I was absent a day before the break. It was hard, but now I need to go onto a website or something, to figure out how to do my interview, or I might interview my Uncle David, or Auntie Christine.

Day 18

4-24-03:

Today I finished up my bibliography, and thought more about who I should interview. I don't know anybody in the idmediate area, but I'm going to make some phone calls, and search for some people.

Day 18

5-06-03:

Today I typed my introduction, and re-arranged my questions, so that they make sense.

DAy 19

5-16-03:

I haven't written in a loing time becaue there's alwasy something wrong with the server. I'm almost doine with my report, it's just that I need to learn how to do certain things. I just addded my bibliography, journal link.

Day 20

5-19-03:

HAven't anyting exciting happend lately. I'm done. I did everything, have one picture of Walt Disney  in there but I'mnot trippin over it.

DAy 21

5-20-03:

Today....ummm... I just edited my um report, like fixed my cover page. This is weird.... ummm... I didn't really do much. I don't know ifI should add more images.

DAy 22
