Preliminary Search for Print Sources on SFPL Databases
Today you're going to do some preliminary searching for print sources on the San Francisco Public Library online databases. To get started, follow the directions below:
- Create the magic of two screens by opening up another browser page in addition to the one you're now on (Apple + N). That way you can read these directions and use the SFPL site at the same time.
- Click on the SFPL link in the right hand navigation bar.
- Copy the library card number in red (hightlight it with your cursor and use Apple + C).
- Click on the graphic link to the SFPL site.
- Under the SFPL Online heading section, click on the Articles & Databases link.
- Under the Articles and Databases - Categories heading, click on Cross Database Search.
- Check the box that says SFPL Basic Search. That will search the SFPL Catalog as well as many of their online databases.
- In the Search For: box, type in the main keyword for your topic. In the box underneath, type in another key word that you think would help your search.
- Click the Search button!
- A dialogue box will appear that asks for your library card number. Paste in the number you copied (Apple + v)
- Click the submit button!
- VERY IMPORTANT: Check the Full-Text Only Articles box under the search boxes!!
- Click the Go! Box!
- Look at what you found
- Revise your search by changing key words in your topic, or changing your topic totally.
