The Wonderful World of Web Design

Introduction

Oi, I am so confused right now. How in the world am I suppose to start my site knowing nothing?! Arg. Anyway, I guess it's going to take me forever to get this done... That's why there are things called tutorials on how to make a website... There are so many different kinds of sites I should go to, but where? Can I get help from where my site is? I should be able to, right?

How do we start our own site?

If you want to start your own site, you obviously need to be able to get on the internet and it shouldn't be at a library. You most likely might have to download things and upload files from YOUR desktop/computer. Anyway, you need a computer, an internet, and an e-mail. You need your computer because, hey, what else are you going to use? You need the internet because, obviously, your site is called a "web" site. You need an e-mail address that works because when you register, the server you are using, will send you information on your site; bandwidth problem (which is something that deals with your site traffic) or anything that has gone wrong. The most important thing is you have to have your parent's permission and/or supervision, you don't want something bad to go on now do you?

You have everything up there *looks up* qualified? Good! So let's move on, shall we? Now that you have the most important things on the go we need to start working...

  1. Get on your computer and log on to the internet.
  2. In the box where it has "http://" type in either: www.tripod.com, www.angelfire.com, or www.geocities.com. Click "go" on the right side of the box and wait until the page loads.
  3. Before you start to make your site, you need to register. When you do this, I suggest you have a parent with you or at least their permission. Pick a name of your choice. (I.E swtazngirl)

Note**You shouldn't put your last name on the internet, you should just put the first letter, and that's it.

You will also need a password; pick a word or name that you can remember and that is not as easy for other people to know.

Now you need an e-mail, use your parents' e-mail address; if the server sent you a letter about your site you can ask your parents to read it for you.

Where can we make our sites for free?

You can make your sites for free at geocities, angelfire, or tripod. They will have pop-up ads. Which aren't really friendly. But most webdesigners start off with something easy to do first, then you can move on to the next level and understand what's going on.

At Geocities, you can use three kinds of programs to make your site: Pagebuilder, HTML editor, or PageWizard. If you want to build a personal site; a site that is all about you, then you should use Page Wizard. It helps you pick out a layout and colors that you want. All you have to do is just type in things about yourself and your favorite links.

If you're looking into something more with effects you should use Pagebuilder. This program helps you to put out text boxes so you don't have to worry about how much the width and length should be. Just click, click again, and drag and stop. That's all there is to it. There are also background colors, text colors, and layouts to pick; effects as in: mouse trails and marquees.

If you want to design something completely by you, as in using HTML, then you should definitly use HTML editor. It gives you a new page, and it has all the <head> tags and the <body> tags, so you don't have to worry about that. All you have to do is just copy and paste. Unless you already wrote your pages on Editpad or Notepad, but that's a different story.

It goes the same for Angelfire and Tripod, only that Angelfire is more complicated and I have no idea how to work it. -.-;;

Are there other ways to make our sites without HTML?

Why yes there is! haha. Just trying to put some humor into this. =) Anyway, yes there is another way. As I have said before you can use the Pagewizard or Pagebuilder. The "without-HTML" effect is there. They also help you understand HTML if you need help with it. The same goes for Tripod.

You can always go and look for help around the site, wherever there is a help link. Just look around.

Is there an easier way to make sites instead of having to click this and that?

Nope, I wish there was, that way we wouldn't work that much. haha. But you never know what the future can bring. Maybe one day we can just have an automated voice activated helping system. That would be amazing, but it would take the fun out of learning it. Which is great, I suppose.

What should I do with my site?

You can do so much with your site, from fan sites to personals. You can always just have an online portfolio too. Scan all your drawings in and post it on your site, and let all your friends and family admire it. Or you can have a fan site, where you can make a site about your favorite author or movie star or singer or whatever you like! Also, you can also just have a personal site; about you, and your friends and your visitors to have fun with. Futhermore, you can just have a weblog, an online journal, where you can just write out your feelings and let people read that they aren't the only people with problems like theirs. It can be very interesting when you're talking about someone or your *crush*. hehe. You just need to use your imagination and creativty. It's your site, so make something out of it, and its ALL ABOUT YOU! Just don't do something that's "ew" or disgusting, because then that's just nasty! Just be yourself! I'm all out ideas, so go go go!!! Start your site!!

Can you give me some definitions to the HTML codes?

Why surely I can! haha. Here are some basic codes for you to use:

**only change the words that are capitalized.

<font color="COLORNAME" face="NAMEOFTHEFONT" size="SIZEOFFONT">

This code is how the writing is going to be on your site.

<bg color="COLORNAME">

This helps you put a certain color background you want on your page.

Conclusion

In the end, learning more aout web designing and HTML has helped me a lot. Now I can go to more sites to get help for my site, which is a good thing, however, much thought has come to my attention. I should be more careful when it comes to registering. Now I feel that I can help more people that want to know more about web designing or HTML. Even though it was COMPLETELY boring, I still had fun finding my information and working with my friends.

Feb. 21, 2003- Friday

Today we went looking for some notes on the internet on our topics. I went to SFPL, the librara catalog, but I didn't really find anything, only a few books, which didn't really help me. So, I just went to the Infotrac Kids edition. That really helped me. I got a great little report on it now. I didn't really do nothing with the notes that I got, I just copied and paste and saved it. They even had pictures. I should make my own, and add a little twist of my knowledge to it. hehe. Out of all the results I got, only one of the books I got was actually useful. Which is weird, I thought there would be a lot of help since on line, you can find websites that could help. But then only one of the sites that I know of, only helps kids to uderstand. Hopefully I can continue to look for notes today!

Feb. 25, 2003- Tuesday

So today I'm back again. I was thinking about a site that I could go to. Its the kids' HTML site. It is very useful to me since I have my own site and all. It helps you with basic HTML to javascript and other hard things. I would put the other HTML sites, but they are mostly for older people, I don't really think that my friends would even understand the language when I don't! So yep. Check out my link, I-search notes,  for the link if you would like to see it. I think I'm gonna go and see if I can look for more. I might blog some more later, depending if I do more research.

Feb. 27, 2003-Thursday

Today we looked for more notes, Ms. Turnbull was telling us what kind of notes we should have and what we should understand. Nothing challenging of course, or else how in the world are we going to even understand one little word except for the words that just REALLY easy. Anyway, I found a good book, but I couldn't get into the book, because obviously I don't have it and they didn't put any of the writing in the computer. So I guess I have to wait until I have to get it. Hopefully the library on San Bruno Ave. has it, because I still need this print soucre, and I do not want a B on this I-Search!! Gotta go, class is ending. See ya!

March 6, 2003-Thursday

Hello! I'm finally back. We didn't do much research today. We kind of went over our articles. My partner was Helen. She's a good editor. We were helping each other on learning how to understand our notes and putting it into our own words. We had to type it out in red font color, that way Ms. Turnbull could read it and not have a hard time. We wrote like after every paragraph. Helen's article was cool. I still need to work on mine. Need to remember a little bit more before I go off and start para-phrasing it. Anyway, I only got up to like 3 paragraphs. And that's about it. I have to go now, class is going to be over soon. bye!

Lily yelled @ 10:32am

March 7, 2003-Friday

We did some more editing. I got some really cool things from Helen and Amy. We were helping each other on out topics. It was funny. I found out that Homestead and Tripod are really confusing sites, and that Geocities isn't that bad after all, even though it can take forever to load. It's still good. Our editing went faster than yesterday. Due to the fact we got use to it. And we learned something! Ticks is a creepy thing. haha. That's Helen's topic. I would say that, teaching someone else how to make a site is harder than making one yourself! Sheesh. That's all for now. Bye!

Lily yelled @ 10:28am

March 10, 2003- Monday

MORE EDITING! haha. It was kind of boring, but when it got to Helen's turn, it was cool. Her topic can be really nasty, but it was funny too. Talking about morbid stuff can be really funny. Amy helped me with somethings and we helped her with things too. It was kind of funny. I think my article is getting a little more harder, since I'm not using the site that they are using to instruct my fellow viewers. haha. My page hasn't even been published yet! Anyway, I'm sure I can be done as soon as I can if I don't make other kind of conversations about Helen's topic. It's so interesting! hehe.

Lily yelled @ 10:32am

March 11, 2003- Tuesday

More boring news, we had to edit more. hehe. I would rather say that it is boring, even though I can hear some really interesting facts from Helen's article. Too bad she was done already and now I have to hold up her time with helping me. Anyway, Helen, Amy, Jazminn, and Janice was helping me. Actually we were helping each other. I had to delete a few paragraphs because the person that wrote the tutorial was starting to talk about themselves, when I'm trying to get information from it to help little kids with their sites. I had to define some words, when they were already FULLY defined, so on some of them I had to write "self explanatory".  haha. I think I have some more editing to do tomorrow. Class is ending, see ya!

Lily yelled @ 10:33am

March 13, 2003- Thursday

I finished with editing my notes! lol... Anyway, we were making our check list today. It was kind of weird answering some of the things because most of them we haven't even started, but I kind of started on my own, because my topic is one of most favorite hobbies. Weird isn't it? Well, I kind of did a funny, yet very stupid thing when I was checking off what I did. Hopefully Ms. Turnbull doesn't get mad at me... I think that's about it. So yep. See you later.

Lily yelled @ 10:30am

March 25, 2003- Tuesday

Ok, back again, haven't been here for a while. I don't think we did much today, since there was a server problem. bleh. It was really annoying, because everytime I tried to post, it would post. So Ya. Before all of that, Ms. Turnbull was showing us some sites about the protest and things. It was cool. Afterwards we continued on with the regular stuff, as always. So yep. I found two more sites that will help with the designing things, and some free sites. hehe. It was kind of easy. Helen and Amy helped me again, and we did the same for each other.

Lily yelled @ 10:29am

March 26, 2003- Wednesday

So, we did some research, again. I didn't find much. I don't think a lot of kids at my age are actually interested in making websites. hehe. I think I'm gonna try to look for more at home, unless, instead I find some better print sources and use those instead. I have some more internet sources in mind, but they might be a little more harder to understand for some people, for I can't understand them that much either. Oh well, I guess I'll have to bring a dictionary with me too. haha. I tried looking in yahoo, but they didn't provide much and the same thing with google. I got some sites, but most of them didn't even work. I basically want to give up on this topic, but i think I have some knowledge to it. Hopefully...

Lily yelled @ 10:32am

March 28, 2003- Friday

Today was another day of searching for internet resources. Ms. Turnbull is checking on how much we have finished. She hasn't gotten to me yet thought. I'm just waiting. While I'm wait, I went around to search for some free webservers. I only found four that would be helpful for people that are planning to start out on making their own sites. I found one more HTML site, it seems pretty good, but you have to register. It even helps you put games on your site! I think I'm gonna try that one for my site. hehe. So basically we did some more searching. I don't think I can find much at school, I might to look for some at home, if I have time. So I guess I'll write more on Tuesday. (no school on Monday yay!)

Lily yelled @ 10:25am

April 4, 2003- Friday

Back in the lab again. It was kind of boring, because we have been doing the same thing for the past week. bleh. I wonder if we'll ever move on to something different. I couldnt' find anymore good HTML help sites. The new ones I have found are really bad, so I didn't post them up. I put up a new resource site and two program sites that let you download their program for a 30-day trial. That should help you design your layouts. =) The resource site is the best. I don't think I could find another site that is as good as the one I just found. I already knew about it. It gives you plenty of sites that are pretty good. So yep. Need to check that out if you want a site. That's all for today, not much. bye.

Lily yelled @ 10:32am

April 7, 2003- Monday

We finally got a chance to start on our biblography (is that how you spell it?). Anyway, we had some server problems, it was kind of hard get everything to load. And then I had another problem. I couldn't find the "update" on one of my internet sources. It seems to me that I have more internet sources than print sources. I think its because you can find more information about webdesign on the internet than on/in a book. Usually you can't even get anything off a book for HTML or web design... whatever you call it. Anyway, I started writing this journal a little too late... bye...

Lily yelled @ 10:33am

April 8, 2003-Tuesday

Ok. We did some more biblography stuff. haha. I had trouble looking for the updates on serveral pages. They can at least put up an update page!! Sheesh... Anyway, Ms. Turnbull said that we can start on our Interview already. I have someone in mind, but I'm not sure if I can interview that person... due to the fact that she's sixteen. -.-;; Hopefully Ms. Turnbull approves of her. I still need to get my book from the library. If I ever have time, Ms. Turnbul said that she could probably get it for me, since I told her I have rehearsal and all... Well, I don't really have much to say, because most of time while I was working, I was looking for the stupid last updates. ah!!!

Lily yelled @ 10:27am

April 9, 2003- Wednesday

Today we didn't get a chance to do much, since we were in class nearly the entire period. Well, we are starting our interviews. I couldn't get my link to post. And it just finally did, so I'm just gonna finish it for homework. Bye.

Lily yelled @ 10:29am

April 23, 2003- Wednesday

Whoo! Back from Spring Break. Its been a while since I have been writing in here. Anyway, its going to probably be a short blog, since its a short period. Today we were thinking about interview questions. We can finally start our interview, soon. I think? Well, I was planning to interview a friend of mines, but then I was trying to think of an adult that is just as good as my friend, and I thought of Mr. D. So yep. I might as well talk to him about it. I don't have to worry about e-mailing all the way to Pennsylvania and wondering if she would reply back when I already have someone right at school. So yep. I gotta go. I have another question in mind.

Lily yelled @ 11:10am

April 24, 2003- Thursday

Back at the lab, again. Ms. Turnbull found a better way to write our bibliography. Its cool. She told us to add it to favs. to whoever that has the internet at home. Now a days they call biblographies "Worked Cited". Seems interesting. hehe. I thought up some more questions. Whoo! That's a good thing. haha. I had trouble thinking up questions yesterday, but I got some today, which is ok. Because earlier it wouldn't post and I lost my questions that I typed out today. gah. Well, at least I remember some things, right? I have to go. bye bye.

Lily yelled @ 11:15am

April 30, 2003- Wednesday

Oi! I haven't been in here for a while. Anyway, we finally started our report. That's a good thing right? lol... Ms. Turnbull told us that we should just write out our notes that we got and answer our IQ questions. I wonder when we're going to get to the interview...?? We've been testing for two weeks, so this is going to be a very short entry. That's all I have to say, so good bye for now.

Lily yelled @ 11:14am

May 6, 2003- Tuesday

Back again. We were working on our Introduction. I helped Amy with hers, sounds tight. hehe. Anyway, mines sounds ok. I wouldn't know if I like it not. I wrote a lot for my report today. Wow. I also found out that we don't have to do our interview, we don't have enough computer time. blah. We can either have two more sources to get an A. I don't want to do that. So I'm just gonna stick with my interview. That's all for now. C ya.

Lily yelled @ 10:29am

May 9, 2003- Friday

Hello. We didn't go to the computer lab yesterday, we were working on our conclusions in class instead, Ms. Carl/Karl/Carol was teaching us (i don't know how to spell her name). So yesterday we were writing up our conclusions. I was thinking, how are we suppose to write up our conclusions when we haven't even finished our report yet? I don't know, but either way, we finished something. hehe. That's good. I already know how my report is going to turn out, I think? Well, I can always have a thought right? Anyway, today I typed out the conclusion and copy and pasted my IQ 5. It posted! Whoo. That's a good thing, last time the server was so bad, it kept on losing my work and I had to type everything all over again, which is not fun, because I couldn't remember anything. g2g bye.

Lily yelled @ 10:33am

May 12, 2003- Monday

I'm bored. I think I finished with everything already. I already have all my IQs answered, my biblography is writen, and so is my introduction and conclusion. Whoo! haha. I just need to finish up other answered questions, my journal, checklist, table of contents and my interview, which I still haven't gotten to yet. gah. Need to do that, *write on hand* Anyway, I guess that's about it. Basically I'm ready to turn this in, hopefully. -.-;;

Lily yelled @ 10:33am

May 15, 2003- Thursday

We're finally starting our revision process. Jazminn and I plan to be partners. I'm done with the parts that are suppose to be written already, just need to get my interview done. -.-;; I keep on forgetting to send e-mail to Mr. D. I have homework and chores to deal with already. arg. Anyway, that's all I have to say for today, I have some codes done for people that want to get started on there sites, there will be more soon. =)

Lily yelled @ 10:32am

May 16, 2003- Friday

Whee. Finally finished with my revision conference. My partner was Jazminn. Her report was cool! I wanted to read more, very interesting. She helped me with mines, and I made some mistakes.gah. Wasn't very happy. Anyway, I just need to fix some mistakes. And that's about it. bye.

The I-search is due THIS Friday! I don't think I'm gonna finish it on time. gah. Need to do this for homework, which I definitly dread. Well, need to finish some other things. C ya.

May 21, 2003-Wednesday

Whoo! I have my report proof read already, so I just need to twick a little bit of this and that. =) I need to find the link to my notes or else I'm just going to get another B and I do not want that! I want a 4.00 when I am done with this year for my semester. Arg. Well, that's about it. I'm done for today, and I finally sent my interview in. Just waiting for it now. bye!
